Heart Rate
Monitoring your pet's heart rate can help you quickly detect heart or breathing problems, high stress or pain.
Measuring the heart rate
Complete rest
Ideally, take the measurement at rest, when your pet is calm or asleep.
Method
Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4 to get the BPM.
Average reference values
Normal resting heart rates:
- Dog (large breed): 60 to 100 BPM
- Dog (small breed): 100 to 140 BPM
- Cat: 140 to 220 BPM
Warning: An abnormally high resting heart rate can indicate fever, pain or heart distress. Contact your vet if in doubt.
Tracking in the app
The app does more than store your readings. Son Espace Santé automatically uses your pet's details, such as their weight and age, to assess whether their resting heart rate is normal and alerts you if it differs significantly from the norms for their profile.
By recording each reading, you can see how the heart rate changes over time, which makes it easier to spot chronic abnormalities early.
