Using GPS day to day

Son Espace Santé

Once the collar is set up (see Setting up a GPS collar), the GPS screen becomes your dashboard: where your pet is, the state of its collar, and everything you need to find it if it runs off.

GPS tracking is being rolled out gradually in the Son Espace Santé app. If the GPS entry does not appear in the Tracking section of your menu, the feature is not yet available on your account.

Opening the GPS screen

  • From the menu, Tracking section, GPS entry.
  • From the GPS button in the bottom bar: it sits behind the "more" button, and you can move it up with Customize the bar.
  • From the animal's profile: the Position card shows a mini map, the collar's state (Connected or Disconnected), the time of last contact and the battery. Tap it to open the GPS screen centred on the animal.

The map

The map shows the last position of each of your equipped pets, and yours if you allow location access. Tap an animal to select it. At the top right:

  • the animal's photo opens the Collar details (greyed out if the collar is disconnected);
  • Center on the animal and Center on me reframe the map;
  • Keep the screen on stops the phone from going to sleep while you follow your pet.

The action bar holds the collar mode button and the "…" menu, which groups all the actions: Lost pet, Locate, Ring, Turn on the light, Restart the collar, Start an activity with the collar, History, Frequent places, Share the position, Safe zones, Collar details, Change collar (if you have several) and Add a collar.

Collar details

They open full screen with three tabs:

  • Information: last position, coordinates, accuracy, distance from you, last contact; battery (and whether it is charging), number of satellites, mobile network; model, identifiers and SIM number.
  • Actions: the same actions as the "…" menu, as large buttons.
  • Events: what happened over the last 24 hours (entering or leaving a zone, low battery, collar connected or disconnected, collar not responding, mode change…).

Collar modes

The more often the collar sends its position, the more battery it uses. Tap the mode button in the action bar to change it:

ModePosition frequencyWhen to use it
LiveEvery 10 secondsTo follow the animal live, or to find it.
ActivityEvery 5 secondsDuring a sports outing you want to record.
StandbyEvery 5 minutesDay to day: an escape is spotted within a few minutes.
EcoEvery 20 minutesTo make the battery last.
SleepNo more positionsBattery saved, for example at night.

The change is not instant: until the collar has applied it, the button says "Switching to …". Live stops by itself after the maximum duration chosen in the collar settings, and the collar then returns to its usual mode.

Locate, ring, turn on the light

  • Locate asks the collar for its position without waiting for the next update: it usually replies in under a minute.
  • Ring makes the collar ring for a few seconds: useful if the animal is hiding nearby.
  • Turn on the light (then Turn off the light) helps you spot it in the dark.
  • Restart the collar reboots it; it reconnects within a few minutes.

"Lost pet" mode

Your pet has gone missing? A single button launches everything you need to find it.

  1. In the "…" menu (or the Actions tab in the collar details), tap Lost pet.
  2. Leave the Ring the collar every 5 minutes option ticked: your pet hears its collar, and so does whoever finds it.
  3. Tap Activate.

The collar switches to Live (one position every 10 seconds) until you have found your pet, for 24 hours at most. A real-time tracking link is created for friends, family and neighbours, and the people following the animal are notified.

During the search, a red banner at the top of the map shows how long the search has been running, the time of the last position, and the animal's distance and direction from you (for example "320 m to the north-west"). It offers three buttons:

  • Directions opens your navigation app towards the last position;
  • Ring sets off the ringer;
  • Share sends the tracking link to friends and family.

Once the animal is found, tap Found! in the action bar: the collar returns to its previous mode and the tracking link is deactivated.

Tip: The GPS Lost pet mode is about the collar. To alert the community around you as well, also use the alert described in Lost pet.

Safe zones and the Home zone

A safe zone is a perimeter (house, garden…): you are notified when your pet leaves it, or enters it. Open Safe zones from the "…" menu to see your zones and create new ones:

  1. Tap Add a zone and give it a Zone name.
  2. Choose the shape: Circle (tap the centre, then stretch), Rectangle or Free shape (tap each corner, then the first one to close it). Then move the edges to adjust.
  3. Choose the Animals concerned.
  4. Tick the alerts you want: Alert when leaving the zone, Alert when entering the zone, and optionally Collar beeps when leaving.
  5. Tick Home zone if it is your home (it is used by automatic mode), leave Zone enabled ticked, then tap Save.

If your pet is not in any zone, the map offers to Create the Home zone around your position straight away. A zone can be disabled without being deleted.

Automatic mode

With a Home zone, the collar can change mode by itself: power-saving at home, responsive as soon as your pet goes out. Turn on Switch modes automatically in the collar settings, then choose:

  • At home: Standby or Eco;
  • Away from home: Live or Standby. Live outdoors is limited to 6 hours, after which the collar returns to its usual mode.

Automatic mode leaves the collar alone during Lost pet mode, an activity or a sleep period. If you change the mode by hand, your choice is kept until the next time the zone boundary is crossed.

Sharing the position

Leaving your pet with someone, or want a friend to follow an outing? Share the position creates a link that can be opened without an account.

  1. In the "…" menu, tap Share the position.
  2. Choose how long to share for: 1 h, 2 h, 6 h or 24 h.
  3. Send the link with your phone's share menu.

The person sees the animal's name, the time of its last position and its track on a map, nothing else. When it expires, the link shows "This share link has expired or has been removed". To cut off all links early, choose Stop sharing in the same menu.

Outing history

The History shows your pet's route over a period: Today, Yesterday, 7 days or Custom (choose the From and To dates, then Show).

  • The Track view draws the route and gives the distance, time moving, average and maximum speed, elevation and number of positions.
  • Positions judged to be outliers are discarded; the "…" menu lets you show them in grey (Show discarded points).
  • Create an activity turns the period into an activity: choose its type, and it joins your activities.
  • Export GPX downloads the track.
  • Clear this period removes these positions from the history, after confirmation.

Frequent places

The Frequent places view of the history shows a heat map of where your pet spends its time, and the list of the main places with the time spent there by day and by night (the place inside your Home zone is called "Home").

  • Filter with All time, Day or Night (night runs from 9 pm to 7 am).
  • The more often the collar sends its position, the more accurate the map.

Recording an activity with the collar

  1. Before the outing, choose Start an activity with the collar: the collar sends its position every 5 seconds.
  2. When you get back, choose Finish the activity.
  3. Choose the type under Save the activity as (Canicross, Ride…), or Do not save.

The activity created opens in your activities, with its track.

Collar settings

Open Collar settings from the Actions tab in the collar details.

  • Collar name and Animal wearing the collar.
  • Usual mode: Standby, Eco or Activity, the mode the collar returns to after Live or an activity.
  • Maximum Live duration: 10, 30 or 60 minutes, or Unlimited.
  • Automatic mode (see above).
  • Alerts: for safe zones and low battery, by notification and/or email; for Collar not responding, by notification, with a delay (Alert after) from 15 minutes to 4 hours.
  • Sleep times: time slots (days, start and end time) during which the collar stops sending its position, for example at night.
  • SIM card: number, APN, and Send the SMS again for configuration.

Tap Save to apply the changes. The Release button removes the collar from your account (to sell it or give it away); the position history stays on the animal's profile.

Making the battery last

  • Keep a power-saving usual mode (Standby or Eco) and turn on automatic mode with a Home zone.
  • Limit the maximum Live duration.
  • Schedule sleep times for when your pet is shut in, at night for example.
  • Leave the low battery alert switched on.
